My first Flavourly subscription

By vikkichowney on August 23, 2015

Last week, I got my first Flavourly ‘gourmet food’ box. I’ve always been a little skeptical about subscription boxes, since I’ve been stung before with tiny sample size items and generally rubbish quality, for pretty high prices. However, someone sent me a link to the Flavourly site, and I liked the focus on ‘Makers’, so thought I’d give it a go.

Delivered once a month, the team selects products from over 500 of the best artisan producers in the UK, all of which are small-batch independents.

At £17/month plus P&P (which drops to £16 when you sign up for a 3 month subscription, £15 for a 6 Month and just £14 for a year), you get sent a box PACKED full of 12 amazing snacks or ingredients.

The sign up process allows you personalise your selection, choosing whether you’re vegetarian, if you prefer to cook from scratch or keep it simple, savoury or sweet, which snacks you prefer, your preference of drinks, spice levels and more. You’re then offered up a ‘Better for Snackers’ box or a ‘Better for Cooks’. The make-up is pretty similar, both boxes include infused oils, condiments and sweet treats, whereas the ‘Snackers’ one contains cereals, crisps and gourmet popcorn, and the ‘Cooks’ one has jams & spreads, sugars & spices and savoury snacks.

The tone of voice is *really* cool throughout (it reminds me of Citymapper); really getting across how much they love their business – and the little touches make all the difference. The personalised letter below, with the name of the person who packed it, was really sweet.

Best of all, sent along with each month’s box, is an introduction to all of the Producer. This is then reflected online, where selected companies are profiled, and the full list for each month is posted.Photo 15-08-2015 10 25 59 Photo 15-08-2015 10 26 07

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 09.10.26You can then buy more of the products sent to you in the Flavourly Marketplace, which lets you search by category, food or producer, and offers free delivery for orders over £25.

The August box was a real treat; the Joe & Seph’s salted caramel popcorn was first to go, and I was pleased to see Soffle’s pitta chips in there too. Funnily enough, I enjoyed the Soffle’s *way* more than when I reviewed them before. I think maybe the batch I’d had previously had been cooked for longer, so were a little tougher to eat.

I’m yet to cook with this awesome Kent’s Kitchen Thai Red meal kit, but can’t wait. The chilli oil, coconut chips were both delicious, and most importantly, the quality of the products is super high.

My absolute stand out hero items were Laura Santtini’s Taste #5 Umami paste. Laura is the daughter of the founders of SANTINI Belgravia, famed for being Frank Sinatra’s favourite London restaurant. Umami is a complex flavouring; only recognised in the past 100 years at the fifth type of taste. I went to her website and found lots of recipes for adding it to dips, so tried the Quick Umami Hummus, and was insanely impressed. More to come I think.

The other was the Organic Coconut sugar from Coconom, which is a completely natural alternative to sugar made entirely from the flower blossoms (not the “coconut”) of the coconut tree. Coconom Coconut sugar is a natural source of trace nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and amino acids, and basically tastes like heaven. I added mine to porridge after reading this, and it was perfect – a caramel-like taste, with no empty calories.

#tastemkr24x24

By vikkichowney on August 20, 2015

A few weeks ago, I had a chat on Twitter with the guys over at @Tastemakr_ about my favourite British foods (Tigg’s original dressing, Dips’ lemon chutney and Smith & Sinclair’s cocktail sweets, in case you’re wondering).

I followed the team, since it looked like they were about to launch something interesting, and four days ago, they did just that.

What the team has done is create an online marketplace and destination for independent food & drink, direct from food artisans and makers. And over the next four weeks, they’re running an online ‘pop-up shop’, where you’ll be able to purchase a new collection of products every day in limited numbers.

Every day, they’re sending out an email to subscribers, profiling a new ‘Maker’.

Day one was Hackney-based baker, Vicky’s Donuts, day two was OHAYO Tomorrow (which means “Good Morning” in Japanese) – a drink you take after drinking, before bed, and will cure you of your hangover. Yesterday was Soda Folk’s Root Beer and Cream Soda, created by Ken Graham – a life-long root beer obsessive – after moving to London from Colorado and finding it impossible to find his favourite childhood drink.

Today’s offering is Koko & Tree’s Macadamia Nut Oil. As Tastemaker says; “When Ilana Botha discovered Macadamia nuts on her brother-in-law’s farm in South Africa she knew she had stumbled across something great. After pressing the oil with her sister they discovered the richness and diversity of Macadamia Nut Oil. Now sourcing Macadamia nuts from her brother-in-law’s farm, Ilana is on a mission to bring small batch Macadamia Nut Oil to tables across the UK.”

Tastemakr was conceived in response to a lack of channels empowering independent food makers to sell direct to consumers, and consumers to discover quality food and drink from independent food makers. While at a food and culture festival in 2014, Anthony O-Thomas, founder, observed the frustration and how difficult it was for both parties.

“On one side, it’s a make or break for these food entrepreneurs and makers to strike a deal with these large retail stores. On the other hand there are very few places you know where you can get handmade almond peanut butter unless you know the person who makes it”

He found that consumers were often searching for ways to remove the middleman and gain direct access to quality food and drink. At the same time, it’s ideal for makers to be able to sell their products to consumers and move away from the idea of big chain retail supermarkets. When successful, this type of trade ultimately creates more room for independent food businesses, artisans and producers on local, national and even international scale.

As you can see from the above, the emails are beautiful, and the products are unusual and high quality. This is a fantastic way to discover and purchase new makers, which 20 whole days left to take advantage. The first three days’ products are sold out, but you can sign up here and get involved from today.

First read: TOAST magazine

By vikkichowney on August 15, 2015

Really decent magazines are hard to find. Really decent food magazines are like gold dust. Most of them are cookie cutter replicas of one another, either trying to cater for everyone; from the new cooks, to the adventurous, or way too hipster and ‘artisan’ to be enjoyable to read.

I stumbled upon a tweet about TOAST magazine last week; set up by the people behind Eat Drink Toast; an event company and creative platform which celebrates the stories behind food & drink. Basically, a bunch of kindred spirits after my own heart.

On a mission to change the way people think about food, and determined to do something different, in 2012 they founded TOAST Festival, a two-day event featuring 40 speakers across 15 events, as well as a pop up shop, bespoke coffee bar and art exhibition. Since the festival, they’ve held events all over London: from debates on the future of meat and the role of women in the food industry, to dinners showcasing British produce, brunches, wine talks and dessert parties. The last one was in June, Made in London, a talk on the return of craft in London and an exploration of the Slow Living movement.

Now, comes TOAST the magazine, an annual publication celebrating food and ideas. I bought a copy, and the Editor’s letter is a perfect summary of what they’re trying to do.

Sent to me with a handwritten address label, I’m happy I was able to contribute by buying a first edition. It’s obviously a labour of love, and while at £15.00 it’s not a throwaway read, the editorial is well curated, well written and beautifully presented.

From Quo Vadis head chef Jeremy Lee’s love-letter to Soho, Meera Sodha’s witty diary of working in Gymkhana’s kitchen and Jojo Tulloh’s ‘culinary fan fiction’ based on the detective Jules Maigret; this is a rich, foodie-lovers dream of magazine. I urge you to buy a copy.

Falling in love with Love Brownies

By vikkichowney on August 13, 2015

I got in touch with Love Brownies during the week to see if I could get a taste of their MULTI award-winning, gluten free brownies.

Last week, the Guild of Fine Food announced the winners of the 2015 Great Taste Awards. This year, over 400 judges met at 49 tasting days across the UK, all blind-tasted, in groups of 4 or 5. The way they organise the awards is super impressive, and guarantees a fair result.

Producers entered 10,000 products this year, with only 130 foods achieving the highest and most coveted rating, three stars. Love Brownies was one of them.

All cards on the table; I’ve always been skeptical of gluten free products. They’re typical high in sugars, and dense or crumbly because of the lack of gluten. But with a wholly open mind, I reached out to founder and Head Baker, Chantal.

The reason I got in touch was because Chantal’s true love for great food shines through when you read about her brownies. She spent five years studying Catering and Management, then another decade or so in various chef jobs around Europe, Australia and the UK.

My family has catering roots. It’s in my blood. I think a gift of food is one of the few wonderful things you can always offer with pride, and accept with pleasure. I’m not really a businesswoman – I just love having the opportunity to make people smile. That’s what matters.

Based in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, each one is baked to order, in its own little tin – they don’t make one big slab and slice it up. And boy, can you tell.

Once they’re cool, the brownies are packaged up and Chantal writes your personal message on the inside, by hand. Then they’re sent safely packing, to arrive within 24 – 48 hours.

The website is easy to use, with suggested greetings and occasions, plus different sizes, gluten vs. non gluten free, and a myriad of delicious flavourings to choose from. I had original chocolate, but I forsee Coconut & Double Chocolate in my very near future.

Apart from the dark chocolate from Venezula, almost all of Love Brownies’ ingredients come from around the bakery in Ilkley. Chantal highlights their eggs, for example, which she gets from a great farm in Ripon; “I am passionate about animal welfare and their hens are looked after beautifully, and it shows in the eggs.”

As for the taste? These brownies are the best I’ve ever had, without doubt. The care and attention, the ingredients, box, freshness – it shines through. Fluffy and crisp around the edges (from the individual bakes), but rich and moist inside, with milk chocolate chunks to add bite and cut through the dark cocoa. They’re little parcels of heaven!

Photo 12-08-2015 18 46 37 Photo 12-08-2015 18 45 56

From great taste to lovely design, packaging and more, I’m not surprised these won a Great Taste Award for the second time. When you put quality and love in, you get great food out.

Buy 4 AMAZING brownies with free delivery for £15.95, or 8 for £18.95 here.
